Dorm Application Process
The dorm application process is relatively simple. However, it is extremely competitive. Housing is assigned on a first-come, first served-basis and is not guaranteed to any students. Also, the application is only open until all spaces are filled, which usually takes one to two days. Once accepted into the school, dates and other information about the housing application that year will be made available to the student.
There are two dormitory options available at Yonsei University for female students: International Housing and SK Global. International House only offers double rooms that come with shared floor bathrooms. SK Global offers both double and single rooms with bathrooms en suite. However, the double rooms in SK Global do not come with a mini-fridge, while both International House rooms and SK Global single rooms do have them. The International House option is the cheapest and the single in SK Global is the most expensive. SK Global is the only option for males. Deciding which room-type before the application opens is extremely important, as the spots do fill up very quickly.
Since the application is so competitive, please be online at the exact time it opens. All the times and dates given are Korean Standard Time, so it is important to know the time difference and prepare for it. Korea is 19 hours ahead of Hawaii. The application consists of less than 5 questions, including the semester and room type the student is applying for. Submit as quickly as possible; There is no time to mess around on this application. The author of this blog submitted her application 3 minutes after the application opened and the application number was already in the hundreds.
However, also remember that living on campus is not mandatory. The school highly recommends students look for off-campus housing in the case of failing to get on-campus housing.

Life in the Dorms
Living on campus has perks. Classes are close. Long gaps between classes can be spent in the dorms. Meeting other people who speak english is easy, although one also should spend time actively finding people who can help with learning Korean if that is one of their goals in coming to Korea. Housing rules can provide a good backbone of restrictions if one thrives best in conditions where there are rules. Hongdae, Sinchon and other interesting areas are within walking distance, but the campus dorms are far enough away to provide separation if one requires it.
However, it also comes with some restrictions. These are important to keep in mind when deciding on whether living in the dorms is appropriate. There are while visitors are allowed, males are not allowed in the International House at all. After a specific time, males are not allowed on female floors and vice versa. Beyond this, opposite genders are allowed to be in common areas together before the aforementioned time; they are not allowed to be in any residence's room together at any time. For both dorms, one cannot have visitors over in the actual residence's rooms at any time. There is also no drinking allowed in the dorms whatsoever. Meal plans are also not available, but there are kitchen items available for use.
No matter what, remember that once in Korea, any actions will reflect on both the United States and the University of Hawaii at Manoa while in Korea. One's actions will shape people's perception of those locations, so have fun but also keep it respectful and appropriate.
